Child support guidelines are in place to ensure that all children are supported financially by both parents to the extent that is reasonably possible. Both Maryland and Washington, D.C., have specific guidelines that determine child support (provided the parents’ household income does not pass a certain threshold).
These guidelines consider each parent’s gross income, the cost of medical insurance for the minor child, any work-related day care expense and any other child support the noncustodial parent has been ordered to pay for other children not related to the case.
In Maryland, courts have more discretion to determine child support if the combined annual income of both parents exceeds $180,000. Your child’s needs and current lifestyle, in addition to each parent’s income, are the primary factors that drive the child support amount in this situation.
Child support guidelines have reduced disputes about setting the appropriate level of financial support, but by no means have they eliminated them. The experienced Rockville child support attorneys at Blank, Moorstein & Lipshutz, L.L.P., assist parents in both Maryland and Washington, D.C., in establishing child support.
